Municipalities4GlobalGoals: some information on the Dutch municipal SDG campaign

Between 2007 and 2015, VNG International ran the successful ‘Millennium Municipality’ campaign to raise local awareness of the Millennium Development Goals and promote initiatives in support of these goals. 165 (out of 388) municipalities participated in the effort. In 2015, the Global Goals Municipality campaign was launched as its successor. More recently the campaign was renamed into Municipalities4GlobalGoals (in dutch: Gemeenten4GlobalGoals). While SDGs is the acronym more commonly used, we feel that the name ‘Global Goals’ works better for communication purposes.

Central to the campaign is the conviction that local governments are key agents in the new 2030 development agenda. A number of goals, such as Goal 11 (sustainable cities) and 16 (effective, accountable and inclusive institutions) are of particular relevance to municipalities. However, local governments have meaningful contributions to make to each of the 17 goals. This is certainly true  in The Netherlands, which has decentralised major social, economic and environmental tasks and responsibilities to the local level. Below is a brief overview of the main components of this campaign.

Through the VNG International website, the VNG magazine, newsletters, a twitter account and other channels, VNG has informed Dutch municipalities about the SDGs. We have made available (on our website and in print) a Dutch translation of the UCLG booklet ‘The Sustainable Development Goals: what local governments need to know’. This concise overview of the SDG’s and the most relevant targets for local governments is very popular as a first introduction to the goals. In addition to written communications, VNG International engages in physical outreach through  regional and local meetings with municipalities and by organising break-out sessions about the SDG’s in the context of larger conferences and events. These meetings create a platform for municipal staff, politicians and sometimes a wider audience to discuss the relevance of the goals to the municipal work, to share existing good practices and explore cooperation. They also provide VNG with a good sense of the challenges of SDG implementation in the Netherlands.
