Organisatie Omschrijving

Aegon's Dutch roots date back to 1844. Today, we have operations in more than 20 countries, including North America where we're known as Transamerica. We offer a range of insurance, pension and savings products.

Aegon and the Sustainable Development Goal's
We believe we have an important part to play in achieving the SDG's. As a provider of finance and economic growth, as well as an employer- we have the resources, skills and expertise to contribute in a positive way and we also have a responsibility to ensure we minimize any negative contribution we may have.

In 2016, we performed an analysis on all 17 goals, aligning them to our business and operations. We looked at each goal and the links with our material issues, our value chain, our businesses and their geographical locations. We assessed were we can meaningfully contribute to these goals.

This process resulted in us identifying these goals that we feel we can have a lasting, meaningful contribution. Goals one (No poverty), three (Good health & well-being) and eight (Decent work and economic growth).

Furthermore, in 2016 we were part of a coalition of Dutch banks, insurance companies and pension funds that analyzed the SDG's as a guiding framework for impact investing. This led to the report 'Buiding Highways to SDG Investing' which was presented to the Dutch Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation, Lilianne Ploumen.

Targeted Impact & Commitments

Goal one- No poverty
We believe we have a part to play in reducing poverty. We contribute to the reduction of poverty through our products and services, as well as through our investments and our research in retirement readiness. Life insurance plays an important role in preventing poverty if a primary household income earner dies. In 2016, we have over EUR 3 billion invested in low-income housing, providing just under 6,000 families and senior citizens on low incomes with access to affordable homes and creating close to 1,800 jobs annually.

In addition, almost 80% of our businesses offered products aimed at those on low incomes, and over 60% of our businesses had active financial literacy programs.

Goal three- Good health & well-being
Good health and well-being are essential to enjoying a long and healthy life. In fact, this is why we are focusing our responsible business strategy not only on financial security but also on health and well-being. Our contribution begins with our own employees. We want them to be healthy and enjoy life. We provide many benefits to our employees across the globe, from flexible work arrangements to health check-ups and on-site fitness classes.

It's also vitally important that our customers enjoy a long and health life, well into retirement.

We offer products aimed at those who live with diseases such as diabetes or have survived illnesses such as cancer- these customers may otherwise not have access to these products.

Goal eight- Decent work and economic growth
We employ over 29,000 employees in over 25 countries around the globe. We have a huge opportunity here not only to provide meaningful, rewarding work, but also to stimulate local economies through the salaries and benefits we provide to our employees and the local taxes we pay. We paid over EUR 2 billion in salaries and benefits to our employees last year and contributed over EUR 300 million to local economies through taxes paid by our employees.

This year, we also invested over EUR 43 million in Triodos Microfinance Fund and responsAbility, providing credit to small, informal businesses in developing economies.

Goal thirteen- Climate Action
Climate change has also been a key theme in our strategy in 2016. We have made a number of investments related to climate change. In 2016, we established a fund focused on solar investments for third-party clients in the US. We made investments in wind energy, including a Norwegian wind park, and participated in the first green residential mortgage-back security, Green Storm. This new form of green bond is used to finance mortgages for new and refurbished homes that meet the highest standards for energy efficiency in the Netherlands. Investors were selected after receiving a 'dark green' rating, indicating a higher standard of sustainability. We invested a total of EUR 60 million both for our proprietary book and for third-party clients. We continue to explore further opportunities for more substantive clean energy investments.
