1. Our goal
2. Four steps for action
3. Raising awareness for the SDGs in your organization and beyond
4. Connect with partnering organizations via (social) media

The hashtags for participating in the flags action are #samenvoordeSDGs and #togetherfortheSDGs

The SDG Flag Campaign “Together for the SDGs” is an initiative of collaborating partners:

1. Our Goal

On 25 September 2020 we celebrate the fifth anniversary of the seventeen Sustainable Development Goals, which encompasses our global framework for an inclusive, just and sustainable society in 2030.

Some good results have been achieved in the past five years, but we also realize that a lot still needs to be done in the next ten years. We need to step up a gear to reach the goals by 2030!

Only together we can achieve the Global Goals. That is why we are launching the SDG Flag Campaign: “Together for the SDGs”.

By hoisting the SDG Flag, companies, civil society organizations, educational centres and governmental organizations show their commitmentment to the Global Goals movement. Dutch universities and multiple municipalities are already engaged, will you be too? In this way, we show each other that we work together to combat major global challenges, such as climate action, gender equality, biodiversity and fair work.

The SDGs form our global compass to deal with these complex challenges in the coming year.

On September 25, world leaders will (virtually) discuss the progress made on the SDGs during the General Assembly of the United Nations. At the same time, the SDG Action Day will take place in the Netherlands, to show that the global goals are widely supported here and to realize the decade of action. We also need you to accelerate delivery for sustainable development! For more information about the SDG Action Day 2020, see here.

2. Four steps for action

  • Find a nice, visible place where you can hoist the SDG flag – preferably at the main building of your organization. On 25 September we will all hoist the flag, but feel free to already do this a few days in advance.
  • Make the hoisting of the flag an official ceremony by devoting special attention to it with a public speech or expression on social media by the director/ board of management. Tell more what your organization is doing with the SDGs and how the goals are important to your organization.
  • Share this speech/expression with a photo or video on social media – obviously with the SDG flag in the picture (!). You can use the hashtags: #togetherfortheSDGs and #samenvoordeSDGs,  and feel free to tag @SDGNederland, @GlobalCompactNL, @VNGi and @MinBZ in your media output.
  • Organize a meeting within your organization how your team, management, colleagues or even partner organization can contribute to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.

3. Raising awareness for the SDGs in your organization and beyond

  • Bring together committed colleagues and establish a SDG core team within your company, organization or school. Or appoint an ambassador who will be the point of contact for everyone who wants to work with the Global Goals. Communicate how your organization is contributing to achieving the goals.
  • Do you have sustainable pioneers in your organization? Give them a platform! Publish their stories with a photo on social media to show their engagement. You can even hand out a prize for the most active colleague(s) during the hoisting ceremony.
  • Engage with children and youth in your SDG actions. Challenge the younger generation to come up with creative sollutions for SDG implementation in your organization, or trigger their creative minds for example during a workshop flag painting.
  • When the Covid-19 measures allow it: organize a sustainability market- or event with local entrepeneurs or pioneers. On the SDG Nederland website you can find more (digital) communication tools.
  • Organize a round table discussion with stakeholders to brainstorm how you can work together to achieve the goals.

4. Connect with partnering organizations via (social) media

The most fun part of the SDG Flag Campaign is that you are part of a bigger movement, over 800 flags will be hoisted throughout the Netherlands and abroad on 25 September!

Dutch organizations and embassies hoisting together the SDG Flag

On September 25, 2020, dozens of Dutch organizations and embassies will participate in the SDG flag campaign to express their support for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations. No fewer than 850 SDG flags will be hoisted!

On the 25th, it will be exactly five years ago that the world embraced the Sustainable Development Goals, seventeen goals that will guide us towards a more inclusive, just and sustainable society by 2030.

Some good results have been achieved in the past five years, but we also realize that a lot still needs to be done in the next ten years. The Netherlands has a good track-record on themes such as “innovation” and “combating inequality”, but room for improvement exists for the environmental and climate related SDGs. We need to step up a gear to reach the goals by 2030!

Only together we can achieve the Global Goals. That is why we are launching the SDG Flag Campaign: “Together for the SDGs”.
